D&D 5.5E allow lists

Introduction

Gotherron uses a mix of official and third party material, and this article is meant to provide clarity about what is or is not allowed when playing the setting in D&D 5.5E. This list is split up by book, and since some of these books are third party books a player may not be familiar with, every source is linked to a purchase page for clarity on what is being referred to. Unless otherwise specified, the options listed under each book are allowed, and options not listed are disallowed.

Player's Handbook Ban List

https://marketplace.dndbeyond.com/PROMOTION/3709000?pid=DB3709000

This is where things get different. The rest of this list specifies what options are allowed. However, the vast majority of the Player's Handbook is allowed, and I don't want to go through every option in the Player's Handbook line by line and list them as allowed. As such, for the Player's Handbook, this section lists what is banned, and anything not on this list is allowed.

Species

Subclasses

Wizard

Diviner

Backgrounds

No backgrounds are banned, but many have to be re-flavored to fit a 20th Century themed world.

Species

Dragonborn Goliath

Halflings, Gnomes, and Dwarves all belong to one species, Dwarf, but the player can choose which set of species mechanics to use. Halflings, Gnomes, and Dwarves all retain unique cultures, as they are different ethnic groups of a species.

Equipment

I'll be writing my own weapon, armor, and equipment lists to verify what is available. With a tech level inspired by but different from Eberron, it needs to be clear what is commonly used. No game balance should be impacted by the new weapon and armor lists, this is overwhelmingly a flavor thing.

Spells

If a subclass or other feature that is allowed provides a banned spell, talk to the gamemaster about getting a different spell as a replacement for the banned spell.

The Divination spell school is banned. See below for a list of spells that have changed spell schools.

Awaken

Clone

Dispel Evil and Good

Hallow

Holy Aura

Nondetection

Protection from Evil and Good

Raise Dead

Reincarnate

Resurrection

Speak With Animals

True Resurrection

Spells that have changed schools

Divination is not allowed, but some Divination spells are desireable or important. These spells have changed to the Abjuration school, meaning they are no longer Divination and are allowed. Furthermore, some Abjuration spells have changed to the Necromancy school. The following list outlines what school each spell currently belongs to.

Guidance - Abjuration

Hunters Mark - Abjuration

Rary's Telepathic Bond - Abjuration

Sending - Abjuration

See Invisibility - Abjuration

Telepathy - Abjuration

True Strike - Abjuration

Cure Wounds - Necromancy

Greater Restoration - Necromancy

Heal - Necromancy

Healing Word - Necromancy

Lesser Restoration - Necromancy

Mass Cure Wounds - Necromancy

Mass Heal - Necromancy

Mass Healing Word - Necromancy

Prayer of Healing - Necromancy
